De Beer by 012 644 8600.

Festive season sees rise in missing children Posted on: 2008-01-04 12:50:32 Since the onset of the school holidays and festive season, figures for missing children have soared and many families wait in anguish for their safe return home. The Pink Ladies, a national non-governmental organisation which helps to trace missing people, says 80% of missing children are runways who leave home due to a lack of stimulation during the long school vacation. According to SAPS statistics, 77 of the 338 children under the age of 18 who were reported missing in the Western Cape between January 1 and December 31 2007 are still missing. However, these figures cannot be finalised as missing children's figures changed on a regular basis.
“Most of these children go missing during the festive season as they have nothing to do as there are no social activities to keep them busy. Some children end up missing out of exploration while others fear going home because they have bad school results. Due to this, the rate of youth suicides also increases,” says director of The Pink Ladies, known simply as Granny Debbie.
The organisation was started in March 2007 when a concerned group of citizens staged a silent protest outside of Parliament to make their voice heard against the case of a missing girl called Sheldeen. The shocking news of the abduction and death of Anastacia Wiese on the same day prompted the formation of the organisation.
“We as a group decided that enough is enough and we were going to do something about it. We started the website www.pinkladies.org.za as a tool in which people could contact us to trace any missing persons. We have done our best to create awareness of missing people by designing flyers with photos and details of the individual and putting them up everywhere. One never knows who will notice or remember the missing person in question and this approach has worked quite effectively,” she explains.
Debbie says the NGO has established a close relationship with the authorities and have been working hand in hand with the overworked and understaffed SAPS in a bid to locate any missing persons. “Our aim is to assist the police and make their job easier as they do not have the proper resources to do all the detailed work when it comes to missing children. We have been receiving many calls from SAPS and the Western Cape command has been sending us many cases to follow up on. Our police are so limited that they often cannot even make a call or send an email. We therefore feel that we have to get behind our police and help where we can. One child missing is one far too much.”
The Western Cape, in particular, has become the focal point of concern due to a spate of missing children cases in 2007. In most instances, these children, predominantly from impoverished areas on the Cape Flats, were found dead. In the latest incident, a two year old boy was reported missing from his parent's home in the N2 Gateway housing complex in Langa on January 2. Qwam Nqgengqa was left in the care of his caretaker, and was found missing when his mother returned from work. He was last seen wearing a blue pants, denim shirt and beige takkies. His photo, details and case number have been printed on a flyer and is being circulated in various communities.
“His is just one of many cases we see and hear of on a daily basis. Most of the time, the poorer families do not even have photos of their children which makes our job very difficult. We therefore urge all parents to keep photographs of their kids and to know the very important details in the event of an emergency. This helps us tremendously when we do our search,” she says.
Anyone with any information or to report any missing children, contact Debbie on 072 2147439 or email missing@pinkladies.org.za. Their website can be accessed at www.pinkladies.org.za. VOC (Tasneem Mohamed)

Sex slave epidemic hits EC Despatch On-line 2008/11/10
THE Eastern Cape is at the centre of a human trafficking epidemic. Hundreds of children are being plucked from the safety of their homes in what has been dubbed the 21st century version of slavery.
Human rights activists this week said they feared that things could escalate as the 2010 World Cup being hosted in this country drew near, when the demand for sex workers increased to service visitors.
These were some of the findings of a United States Agency for International Development- funded report, which found that West African organised crime syndicates were operating in this province. These syndicates were found to be trafficking local girls, young and older, into commercial sexual exploitation in other parts of the country.
?Black and coloured girls, aged between 18 and 21, are being lured from their homes mainly for prostitution, but also to be used as cheap domestic labour,? the report said.
The report, titled No Experience Necessary: The Internal Trafficking of Persons in South Africa, was the result of a six-month International Organisation for Migration survey conducted from March to September throughout South Africa. The survey sought to link internal trafficking in the country to commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour and the removal of organs.
?The province of origin for victims most frequently noted was the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal, Northwest Province, Limpopo and the Northern Cape,? the report read. This week, organisations involved in investigating cases and providing therapy for victims confirmed to the Saturday Dispatch that human trafficking was rife in the Eastern Cape.
Pink Ladies, a national organisation of volunteers who assist in the search for missing people, said they had over the last 18 months been working with girls trafficked into or out of the Eastern Cape.
The organisation?s director and founder, Gran Dessie, said they were currently hot on the trail of a Port Elizabeth teenager who was snatched off the beach and taken to Cape Town and then Bloemfontein.
?Foreign nationals are targeting young girls and boys, stopping at nothing to feed their ever-growing money-making business of human trafficking,? she said.
The Cape Town-based Activists Network Against the Exploitation of Children Domestic Workers recently intercepted the trafficking of two Eastern Cape girls who were in transit to other parts of the country, or even abroad.
?We are still investigating their cases and cannot say for sure where they were headed,? said an official who did not want to be named.
East London social worker and councillor Renette Jarman said she was aware that human traffickers were targeting the province, taking girls, boys and, in some cases, the whole family. ?They offer a man and his wife jobs and offer to transport and accommodate their children, too,? she said.
But once they reach their destination, terms change and they get exploited. The victims are passed from area to area by relay, but the victims never see the trafficker. ?They offer money, jobs and a better life, creating a bond of debt from which victims never recover,? Jarman said.
Living Waters, where Jarman works, recently housed and provided therapy for a 20-year-old girl who had spent a year working as a prostitute in Quigney, East London.
The girl, Jarman said, eventually escaped after working for nothing more than a daily fix of drugs and food.
?She left to go in search of her family,? said Jarman. - By NTANDO MAKHUBU

Missing boy's whereabouts still unknown Anga Anatha Ludidi has no more words to describe the anguish she is feeling - it's 11 days since her 7-year-old son Likho was abducted. "I just want my child back," she said. The little boy was abducted on his way to school in Protea Glen, Soweto, and both police and family have no new leads on the child's whereabouts despite an all-weekend search. Pink Ladies, a non-governmental body which assists in finding missing children around South Africa, yesterday joined the search for the child. - Thandi Skade Missing baby's remains found The remains of a 1-year-old infant were found in Ladysmith at the weekend, KwaZulu Natal police said yesterday. The body of Ayanda Nene was found by a farmworker. The baby's mother told police that the child was playing in their yard in Bergville on July 30 when she went missing. A search was launched but Ayanda could not be found. Police then opened a case of kidnapping. Police said a postmortem would be carried out soon and that investigations were continuing. - Sapa

09/04/2008 12:51 PM - (SA) Brothers grieve for stolen pets SUZELLE FOURIE TWO brothers from Ysterplaat have travelled over 12 000 kilometres around the Western Cape in search of their missing dogs. They will never give up. When thieves drove off in William Pretorius's red Mazda Rustler bakkie on 11 March, they were also kidnapping his beloved pets. He has not known a moment's rest since the day Lucy and Shadow disappeared along with his vehicle. Thousands of posters have been put up in highly visible places from Melkbos to Muizenberg and beyond. The Cape's community radio stations have broadcast details of their quest. Veterinary surgeons and animal welfare are on the lookout and Crime Stop has come on board. The search has brought forth overwhelming support from all corners. Even The Pink Ladies, a non-profit organisation devoted exclusively to finding missing people, have for the first time joined a search for missing animals. “We have now gathered a nation of people who are so concerned,” said a distraught William (40), last Thursday evening at the home he shares with his brother Raymond (36). By then he had gone practically without sleep for three weeks. He is a law enforcement officer of the City of Cape Town and Raymond works as a porter at the Grootte Schuur Hospital. They have devoted every available waking moment to finding their dogs. The police have recovered his stolen vehicle. It was found stripped and abandoned in the area of the Strand. William went to the Stikland vehicle recovery centre to identify his bakkie and found sand in and outside the vehicle. “They must have been some?where on a beach or near the sea. It could have been anywhere along the coast.” He deeply regrets taking the dogs along on that fateful Tuesday when he and Raymond went shopping in Milnerton. They had parked in their usual spot in the parking area behind Shoprite. The dogs were in the back, as always. “We were inside the shopping centre for less than fifteen minutes. When we came out, they were just gone. I can live with the loss of my vehicle, but not the loss of our friends.” Shortly after the story first appeared in a daily newspaper, a woman phoned William to say she had seen the whole incident but had not realised at the time what was actually taking place. “She told me she saw two black men getting out of a silver grey car with tinted windows, walking over to my bakkie, getting in and driving off. “This is not just a case of missing pets. Their disappearance is part of a crime that has been committed. They were stolen along with my vehicle.” He suspects trolley guards at the shopping centre of colluding with the criminals. “My bakkie had been broken into before in that parking area. Nobody noticed anything then. I have been shopping there for years and they knew my vehicle and my dogs.” Now he and Raymond just want their “children” back. Lacy and Shadow are fox terrier/Jack Russell cross-breeds. . Anyone with information should phone William on 073 003 2969 or 021 511 2210.

Court orders not worth much if not enforced Hanti Otto August 28 2008 at 11:21AM
If a high court order - or any court order - cannot be executed, it is not worth much. Says lawyer and council member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, Johan Gresse: "A court order is only a piece of paper if it is not enforced".
Referring to court orders regarding debt, Gresse said that of the thousands of orders made by courts, no more than 10 percent were successfully concluded.
"Court orders not being adhered to constitute a huge problem, especially because of the current economic situation. It is even a struggle to get orders against the State enforced," Gresse said. However, obtaining a court order was better than doing nothing at all. 'If you don't take the legal route, you must know you are writing off the money owed to you' "If you don't take the legal route, you must know you are writing off the money owed to you, that you are willingly losing it.
"If you have such a court order, it is effective for the next 30 years. And the amount owed and ordered by the court to be paid, attracts interest, although the interest can never amount to more than the original figure claimed".
Therefore, if one happens to run into the evasive debtor again, the court order can still be enforced.
Gresse said this was also handy if the debtor was declared insolvent. As soon as he obtained employment or money again, the court order could come into action. One could then even get an order attaching some of the person's salary.
"So, if you put in the effort - and money - to obtain a court order, at least you have a bit of a chance to get back what is yours," he said. 'Justice, or a version of it, is most often bought by those with the most money' Jacqui Thomas, director of the Pink Ladies, who has been in the legal industry for 15 years and worked with women and children victims, said that unfortunately in most cases a court order was the only way to go.
"Without an order, one has no chance. Take for example a protection order - this might be all a woman has to remove an offending party. Without a court order nothing can be done," she said.
However, no order was worth its weight unless all role players did what they could to enforce it, Thomas said.
"Without the ability to properly enforce an order, it is not worth the paper it is written on. Our justice system has failed many in enforcing their human/constitutional and legal rights for time immemorial".
Activist Charlene Smith said there was faith in the justice and courts system, which the honest often found sadly misplaced.
"Justice, or a version of it, is most often bought by those with the most money. The honest and poor or middle class usually can't afford it," she said.
Smith said innocent members of the public had misplaced trust in things like asset forfeiture, protection or maintenance orders, believing that if the orders were not obeyed, the offender would be arrested.
"Fat chance! I have personal experience of this. No court order, whether from the high or magistrate' court, is worth anything without enforcement. And that requires courts to care enough to order it. Also, the cost and red tape and delays are unbelievable, and you need an effective police force to implement it".
Several advocates, who cannot be identified, said the main problem was the lack of steps taken when a court order was not obeyed.
"It is a criminal offence, contempt of a court order. The perpetrators should be prosecuted. Maybe that will send out a message that laws and orders should be obeyed".

Johann Billio by 053-203-7200 of mnr. Koos Janse van Rensburg by 083-433-8185 bel.

Gisteraand by Hansie en Marisa Horn in Pretoria Tuine gaan kuier.
Dankie julle!

Nóg 'n jong vrou soek Jul 13 2008 11:03 PM Jana Engelbrecht
RITCHIE. Me. “Verder is alles net so gelos. Jeanetta het volgens haar R1 000 kontant by haar. Mnr. Swanepoel het bevestig 'n selfoonsein is gistermiddag weer in Pretoria opgevang. “Dit wil voorkom asof sy dié Chris probeer bel. Dit laat my dink dat sy nog nie by hom is nie. Waar is sy dan?” Enigiemand met inligting kan Olivier by 082-449-0511, die Pink Ladies by 072-214-7439 of die polisie by 10111 bel. Volksblad

Soektog na driejarige uitgebrei JACKIE PIENAAR-BRINK 12/11/2008 11:55:35 PM - (SA)
Stellenbosch. Stephen Adams by 021 809 9140 of 079 854 2680 bel.

Me.

In Silent Protest… Wed, 05/03/2008 - 07:30
Today the DA is joining the Pink Ladies in silent protest against the deaths of Sheldean Human, Annestacia Wiese and the thousands of other children that are victims of crime and abuse in this country. This time last year, the body of Sheldean Human's body was found in Pretoria. She was age 7, and had been raped and murdered. At the time of her death, she was wearing a pink top and jeans. That same week, the country was again shocked to hear that 11-year-old Annestacia Wiese, also dressed in a pink top and jeans, was raped and murdered in Mitchells Plain. So who are the Pink Ladies? On the night of March 5, when Sheldean's body was found, a group of people involved in the search for the girl founded the Pink Ladies. Since then, the Pink Ladies has been involved in about 104 missing person cases with a recovery rate of 90 percent. Today, the DA and businesses across South Africa are commemorating the ‘Pink Ladies National Missing Children's Day', by wearing Pink. “While symbolic gestures are important for raising awareness, the government should be doing much more to protect our children,” said DA spokesperson on child abuse Mike Waters. “The abduction of children happens in South Africa on a scale seen in few other places in the world, yet we are hopelessly under-prepared to find children once they go missing. The case of Madeleine McCann shows how far our country still has to go in gearing up to find missing children. The massive awareness campaign has caught the attention of millions of people across the world, using every possible avenue to transmit information,'” he said. Waters said that South Africa needs to adapt itself to being able to stage similar campaigns, such as sms and photo link-ups, radio alerts and schemes similar to Code Adam in America, which creates a way of instantly galvanizing people in the immediate vicinity of a reported abduction. Each year, 1 075 children are murdered in South Africa, nearly 24 000 children are raped, and there are 20 879 cases of molestation. Surely, this is cause for major concern and action?
